Abstract

Doan Truong Tan Thanh (The Tale of Kieu) by Nguyen Du is a great work containing life philosophy and the artist's talent. For a long time, many people have still believed that "talent" and "fate" in The Tale of Kieu represent a regular relationship - a conflict or a rivalry. However, through the work and the artistic image of the character, Nguyen Du clearly shows readers that "talent" can overcome and neutralize "destiny". Besides morality, talent is also an important human value and quality. Not only scientific talents but also talents in artistic creativity and qualities need to be promoted. This is also one of Nguyen Du's contributions that should be recognized when approaching the work

Abstract

The Manifesto of Vietnamese Culture, composed by Trường Chinh in 1943, has been applied as a guiding text for the revolutionary culture until now. Howerver, its application and influence have varied in different historical and practical contexts. This article presents how this important work has been applied in practice and has influenced other cultural writers before the August Revolution and during the Anti-French resistance war in Vietnam specifically in two aspects: the application of the Manifesto of Vietnamese Culture in cultural activities led by the Communist Party and its unintended influences on urban literature controlled by the French Colonial Empire from 1945 to 1954. This analysis reveals how enthusiastically and widely this Manifesto was received by writers and artists and discussed passionately during the furious revolutionary struggle of the Vietnamese.

Abstract | PDF (8.8M)

Abstract

In the context of cultural conflicts between East and West, tradition and modernity in the early twentieth century, Pham Quynh was one of the contemporary intellectuals who created a deep impression of his approach to new culture through cultural hybridization. Based on post-colonial theory, particularly the concept of hybridity, the article analyzes Pham Quynh's cultural hybridization policy in the Nam Phong Journal. This policy involved proposals such as harmonizing the new and old, incorporating elements from both Asia and Europe, combining East Asian ethics with Western European science, building a new national culture that unified East and West, and even merging the beauty of Chinese literature with French literature. Thereby, it can be seen that "hybridity" was once considered a priority not only for Pham Quynh but also for many colonial intellectuals at that time.

Abstract | PDF (8.1M)

Abstract

This research approaches Vietnamese historical novels, focusing on the case of Hoang Quoc Hai through the lens of discourse theory. The article uses historical-cultural methods and comparative methods to determine the communicative message, narrative structure, and value of the work. Through this study, Bao tap trieu Tran (The Turmoil of the Tran Dynasty) and Tam trieu vua Ly (Eight Dynasties of King Ly) create history as a journey of the rise and fall of dynasties. The work built its content and narrative structure based on the stance of national interests associated with the role of the royal court. The fulcrum that created the meaning of the work is the original model "Father", in which the story focuses on the roles of parents, military leaders, strategists, and historical achievements. Hoang Quoc Hai's works represent the novel-legend discourse creation model. Despite being unrevolutionary, his works, with vivid storytelling and a strong sense of heroism, continue to be cherished by readers and assert the position and value of literature in society.

Research results show that The Master and Margarita is a literary parody of Socialist Realism. It not only deconstructs totalitarian social models but also contains profound philosophical, aesthetic, religious, and artistic conceptions that transcend all times. Bulgakov’s talent and thinking, which were blocked by the limitations of contemporary society, have become a symbol of true art today.
