Abstract

Juan Rulfo, a Mexican writer, had a significant influence on his contemporaries and posterity, although his works were not very abundant. His legacy includes a collection of short stories, The Burning Plain, and a novel, Pedro Páramo. This paper approaches Juan Rulfo's The Burning Plain from the theory of landscape criticism to analyze the problem of environment and landscape, which Juan Rulfo has always been concerned about. The devastated landscape, the dead landscape and the residual landscape are a metaphor for the human default and the decay of society. By researching the relationship between landscape and people, the paper will analyze important topics that Juan Rulfo's short stories present: the land regime, corruption, the state of war, and violence pushing humans into crime.
