Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate the relationship of Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) between Vietnam and United States (U.S). Conducted were unit root test; Johansen Co-integration test; Vector Error Correction Model, and monthly time series data spans from January 2010 to De- cember 2015. The results support the theory of PPP holding between Vietnam and U.S. Based on this result, policy makers can calculate the real exchange rate, and find out the effect of exchange rate on trade balance in order to set suitable policies to improve trade balance. The managers of MNCs can forecast the bilateral exchange rate to find the best options to reduce risk or maximize profit.

Abstract | PDF (1M)

Abstract

Recently, due to the developments in medical technology, the field of neuroscience has been expe- riencing an unparalleled growth, resulting in many breakthroughs in the field’s understanding of how the brain learns and constructs information. The aim of this paper is to review the key findings of this research and propose implications for designing research in CALL. The findings are reviewed against the backdrop of a critique of current CALL research, which continues to show resistance to change and seems unable to offer new directions to second language (L2) pedagogues. This is a conceptual paper that hopes to inspire CALL scholars and postgraduate researchers to expand the traditional sources of the literature that define the scope of L2 studies and to integrate evidence from emerging research in order to modernise the field and its implications for practice.

Abstract

The present paper concerns itself with the recent policy changes in higher education across South- East Asia that advocate a shift toward competency-based learning. The change impacts also on English Language Teacher Education (ELTE) programs that seek to prepare pre-service teachers for a career that, increasingly, requires from teachers to be imaginative, innovative and intellectually engaged lead- ers. However, research shows that the new policies present numerous challenges to lecturers in lan- guage teacher education programs in South-East Asia: old habits persist and role models are missing. The present paper addresses the need for examples of quality practices in language teacher education and shares with readers the researcher's own experiences in addressing the new challenges in the Aus- tralian context. The principle that informed the researcher's own teaching model drew on the under- standing that the new career descriptors of school teachers emerged from the world that is becoming increasingly aware that schools belong to community, and that community is not a closed enclave but a conglomerate of "conversations", past and present, in which we participate as professionals. Hence, the key aim of the approach described in this paper was to design strategies that would enable pre-ser- vice people to expand their concepts of their professional community and expose them to ideas that they identify to be interesting, informative and inspiring their interest in future professional development.

Abstract

In teaching listening, it is widely known that a good pattern for listening session should include three stages: pre-listening, while-listening, and post-listening. The aim of this paper is to investigate the employment of pre-listening activities to help improve English-majored students’ listening compre- hension at Van Hien University. The paper first defines the listening process and then reviews various pre-listening activities that are used in teaching and learning listening skill. In order to illustrate the importance of the use of pre-listening activities, the experiment was employed with the participation of two separate groups: one experimental group and one control group. Pre- and post-tests were used to explore students’ performance before and after the use of pre-listening activities in teaching listening lessons. The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups after the experiment. This difference was in favor of the group experiencing pre-listening activities. Finally, from the research findings, recommendations were made in the hope of improving listening practice and teaching.

Abstract

Relative clauses play a crucial role in improving students’ writing and speaking performances. In this study, a 20-question survey was delivered to 100 EFL seniors at a university in Vietnam to find out the extent to which they understood different types of relative clauses and different relative pronouns. Also, the frequency at which these relative clauses and pronouns were used in their written and spoken communication was investigated. The findings showed the participants’ lack of understanding of these aspects. They also preferred using restrictive relative clause over non-restrictive clause, and certain rel- ative pronouns were used significantly more frequently than the others. Recommendations for teachers to raise students’ understanding of relative clauses and relative pronouns, as well as to improve students’ performance were also made for teachers’ conventional teaching practice.

Abstract | PDF (1.3M)

Abstract

Retaining and managing talented employees are extremely meaningful efforts for organizations to ensure their competitive advantage. In Vietnam, more and more women have been holding important roles in national and foreign companies. However, Vietnamese women must also balance the quality of their roles as wives and mothers. This creates psychological pressure and causes difficulties for married working women. This paper aims to examine the factors affecting academic burnout and job performance of married working women. Using data collected from 343 respondents, we found that academic burnout was inversely related to core self-evaluation and positively related with work-family conflict (and family-work conflict), whereas job performance was directly proportional to core self- evaluation and inversely proportional to work-family conflict (and family-work conflict). The findings suggested that married working women need an optimistic self-view to deal with conflicts between job and family more easily, and to reduce academic burnout, and improve job performance.
