Abstract | PDF (454.9K)

Abstract

In this article, we use Giles Fauconier's cognitive space theory to examine and research the elements that govern the mental process or also the elements of the cognitive space of the perception verbs ‘nhìn’ and ‘thấy’ in Vietnamese. This helps us better understand the way of generating and understanding the utterances with those two perception verbs above. Based on this, we can apply in teaching Vietnamese to foreigners to help them generate standard Vietnamese. Besides, it also helps the translation between Vietnamese and other languages be more precise, effective and subtle.

Abstract | PDF (1.3M)

Abstract

By referring to the works ofMills (1995, 2006) and Montoro (2014), this paper gave an overview of feminist stylistics including concept, origin, directions of research, approaches and methods to Vi- etnamese readers. More specifically, to help the readers figure out in part the content and approach of this relatively new stylistic strand, the paper put some pages to introduce one concrete and interesting research aspect of feminist stylistics: the gendered sentence. Its final goal is to change awareness of the gender through analysing issues in the texts, with a view to changing awareness and reality of our society.

Abstract | PDF (270K)

Abstract

Concept is the mental unit or mentality of human consciousness, is the content of dynamic memory, mental lexicon and brain language, and of the whole world’s picture being reflected in human psy- chology. Cognitive metaphor is a mental manipulation, helping us to perceive the surrounding world. Cognitivists divided cognitive metaphor into four types: structural metaphor, conduit metaphor, orien- tational metaphor and ontological metaphor. In this paper, we explore the concept of “mouth” in Han Mac Tu’s poems under the perspective of conceptual metaphor (ontological metaphor) as to serve as the process of encoding the emotional and aesthetic perception in Han’s poems.

Abstract | PDF (339.5K)

Abstract

The subject of adaption from literature to the stage script was not a new problem. It was, neverthe- less, not until recent years that the phenomenon became featured. Notably, the short stories authored by Nguyen Ngoc Tu have been adapted for several times on the stage in Ho Chi Minh City. To this end, from the perspective of the genus, the article explores the similarities and differences between the two types of art in an attempt to point out the distinctions between literature and the stage, as well as the perception of the process to create an adaptation scenario, thereby formulate more valuable literary scenarios as the current scenario source is severe underrepresented.

Electronic version: 30 Jan 2018 | DOI: 10.58810/vhujs.5.5.2017.5522
Abstract | PDF (397.5K)

Abstract

Influenced by the experimental method of naturalism, in some works, Maupassant applied the works of experimental novel to his works to explain several phenomena in nature and society. Maupassant was interested in the progress of science – technology, stroved to use scientific and encyclopedic preci- sion in his short stories. He paid a special attention to its rapid change as well as its impact on spirit. Other characteristics of naturalism in his short stories include: detachment, in which the author main- tains an inpersonal tone and disinterested point of view; determinism, in which a character's fate has been decided, even predetermined, by impersonal forces of nature beyond human control.

Abstract | PDF (493.8K)

Abstract

Via the Historical – Logical approach, this paper analyzes the model of population transition in Vietnam from 1935 to 2016. Results indicate that although Vietnam experienced all described periods of population transition in theory, the population transition model in our country also owns special features. First of all, the transition in birth rate comes over 20 years earlier than that in death one, and the post-transition period is predicted to occur after 2049. Secondly, the figures of birth, death and population growth speed in Vietnam in the transition period is higher than those in theory. The cause of this difference lies in our inheritance of modern medical achievements and technical, fi- nancial supports from international organizations for the upgradation of the population quality after exiting two wars at those first years of XX century. Moreover, the progress of urbanization, educa- tional improvement and medical service upgradation, on one hand, help the longevity increase; but also on the other hand enable the people to restrict their own birth rate, which boosts the population transition in Vietnam’s current scenario - with an unfinished industrialization period.

Abstract

The concepts of “culture” (English, French), “kultur” (Germany) were formed in the seventeenth century in Europe, to the late nineteenth century were introduced to the East to form the concepts of “bunka” (Japanese), “wenhua” (Chinese), “văn hoá” (Vietnamese). Since it became a scientific term in the late nineteenth century, this concept has been interpreted very differently and has changed the meaning many times. From its original meaning of civilising, “culture” has changed in meaning to refer to the spiritual capabilities, then expanded the definition to denote artificial phenomena in human society. And to the late twentieth century, its meaning has been narrowed to be attached to the nations, ethnic groups: Culture is all of tangible and intangible activities, products and values created by human, that are accepted, popularized and inherited by generations of human, help to distinguish between human and nature, and distinguish between an ethnic group and other ethnic groups, between a nation and other nations. Using the method of analysis - synthesis of materials and method of com- parison, the article provides new perceptions about “culture” and important meaning of the perceptions in shaping cultural policies of the state and in behaving towards culture of the social community, in thecontext of the economic and technical globalization of the world today.

Abstract | PDF (392.6K)

Abstract

Based on the application of descriptive statistics and Box-Jenkins method, in this paper, unit root test and Granger causality test have been conducted for double logarithm and ARIMA models. This paper tries to figure out suitable models to forecast catfish exported volume from Vietnam to the USA market. With the time series data of UN-Comtrade and NOAA, the results reveal that the export quantity of Vietnam to the US will increase for one year followed by a little bit decrease but still higher than the recent quantity. Moreover, analyzing the different models, this paper suggests that ARIMA is the suit- able model for forcasting the exported quantity of Vietnam to the US market. Even though there is need for further research to have a more multi-perspective view of the forecast model, the result is a reference for policy makers, businessmen in case of export catfish

The relationship between transparency and the attraction of foreign direct investment in ASEAN countries

Electronic version: 30 Jan 2018 | DOI: 10.58810/vhujs.5.5.2017.5542
Abstract | PDF (1.1M)

Abstract

Many recent studies have focused on the effects of transparency on FDI inflows. Theoretically, trans- parency can act as either a “grabbing hand” by raising uncertainty and transaction costs or a “helping hand” by “greasing the wheels” of commerce in the presence of weak regulatory framework, which should exert an influence on the attraction of the FDI flow into a country. This study uses dynamic panel data in the 11 years from 2005-2015 in order to provide an empirical test of the impact of the transpar- ency on attracting FDI of 11 ASEAN countries. The results show a strong statistical evidence of the relationship between the transparency and the attraction of FDI flow in ASEAN countries.

Abstract | PDF (298.4K)

Abstract

The survey carried out from November 2015 to January 2016, aiming at optimizing the spacing and amount of the nitrogen fertilizers applied on Chrysanthemum Vang He variety, Gia Lai province. The two-factor experiment was arranged with strip-plot design, following three replications. The horizontal factor included three spaces (A1: 10x16cm; A2: 12x16cm, A3: 14x16cm). The vertical factor included four rates of nitrogen fertilization being applied (B1: 120kg/ha; B2: 140kg/ha; B3: 160kg/ha; 180 kg/ ha). Results show that: the Chrysanthemum Vang he variety, at the 10x16cm space, increased its height, theoretical yield and yield of class 1 flower, nevertheless got smaller size compared to its growth in larger spaces. The height, number of flower and diameter of flower and productivity of class 1 flower that was applied at 160 and 180 kg/ha of nitrogen fertilizer is better than 120 and 140 kg/ha of nitrogen fertilizer. The results showed that the yield and economic efficiency was the best when Chrysanthemum Vang He variety was used at both of 10x16 cm space and 160kg/ha nitrogen fertilizer.
