Abstract

The novel White War, written by Ahn Jung-Hyo portrays the Vietnam War from the perspective of a South Korean soldier. This study introduces the historical and cultural context in which White War was written, emphasizing South Korea’s role in the Vietnam War. It explores the profound impacts of wartime violence and cultural violence on the psyche of soldiers during and after the war. The study integrates trauma theory, discourse-analytical approach and the analysis of historical and cultural contexts to explore forms of violence and the representation of trauma in the novel. Through this exploration, research underscores the significance of literature in identifying the structures of violence and the cultural forces that generate trauma, affirming the novel’s value in fostering recognition of pain, sharing of responsibility, and promoting of cultural dialogue.
