Abstract

Originating from psychology, the stream of consciousness technique has become a significant artistic method in literature, transforming the depiction of characters’ psychological depth and bringing readers closer to the complex and authentic workings of the human mind. From a comparative perspective, this paper examines the use of stream of consciousness in the novels of James Joyce and Mario Vargas Llosa, in relation to psychoanalytic, postmodern, and postcolonial theories. Both authors employ this technique to disrupt traditional narrative structures and construct a fragmented, multidimensional reality. While Joyce focuses on inner struggles and crises of identity to reveal existential tensions and colonial pressures, Llosa adapts stream of consciousness to reflect psychological trauma and social injustice within a postcolonial context of systemic oppression. The similarities and differences between the two writers not only reflect their distinct socio - cultural contexts but also underscore the role of the stream of consciousness technique in renewing the art of the twentieth - century novel. More than a narrative device, stream of consciousness emerges as an artistic lens through which the nature of human existence and society is examined during times of historical transition.
