Abstract

Development of multi-disciplinary universities for global integration and in response to the high-skill labor demand of knowledge economy If Vietnam has only piece-meal and slow changes without a clear policy for fundamental reform in higher education system with measures for merging and restructuring narrow disciplinary higher education institutions into multi-disciplinary universities with full autonomy, Vietnam higher education will continue to be inefficient and can not response to the high-skill labor demand for development. A higher education reform in early 1990s is for the establishment of multidiscilolinary universities folowing the university model of England and America which includes research institutes. Multi-disciplinary university model should be clearly defined in Higher Education Law 2012 to create a legal framework for a unified management of higher education system and to abolish the old system of various ministrial management of different higher education institutions and research institutes. Multi-disciplinary university model and university autonomy have not been considered as important issues so that higher education will continue be inefficient and can not response to the high-skill labor demand of knowledge economy.
