Abstract

Marriage and coming-of-age ceremonies are necessary life-cycle customs of Northeast Asian countries in general and Japan in particular. These customs are not only a unique spiritual culture but also a form of expression for traditional Japanese thinking and lifestyle. Many studies have been on Japanese marriage and coming-of-age ceremonies, especially in the Heian period. Still, there have not been many studies from the literature perspective. Through "Genji Monogatari," this article indicates the marriage and the coming-of-age custom of the aristocracy who lived in the palace during the Heian period to explore the uniqueness of their spiritual life, which was far from the miserable life of ordinary civilians outside the palace.
